<image:title>homeworks - bedroom</image:title>
<image:caption>This photograph is a part of my final submission for the Kwantlen Polytechnic University course FINA 3202: Special Topics in Studio Arts - The Real, as taught by Vancouver artist Elizabeth Barnes, covering the broad and vast topic of what is real. This photograph is a documentary joiner-style photo collage of the cluttered and unorganized spaces in my house. More than 150 images were shot for this work and a long process of editing resulted in the 40-50 images seen presented here. I like working with the joiner as the abstracted style mimics an almost cubist approach to capturing the fragmented feelings I have dealt with in dealing with my place. And that is why this image has been ultimately created --- to illustrate the personal struggle I’ve had with keeping my house clean. I consider myself very lucky to have a place of my own, but the reality of the demands on my time and the responsibilities in my life has resulted in my house not consistently receiving the time and attention it needs. My bedroom has not always been the most unorganized but it has been a central space for me - a retreat or escape from the larger messes that encroach on my life. It has been a place where I have escaped to in depression, where I sleep (or hibernate), a place where I have cowered and cried. It’s a struggle that I am overcoming, albeit very slowly, but I am very aware on how it has affected other aspects of my life. For a time, I wasn’t having anyone over because I was ashamed with the unorganized state of the rooms in my house (my Mother still isn’t allowed in my house – yet). And it has affected my ability to produce artwork. My garage, as well as my den and studio are supposed to be places where I can work on my art, but in the unorganized state they are in that has not been possible for me to do effectively. By documenting my mess with photographs like this and like ones in my series titled "a simple sight of essence" (2013), I am not only creating a work of art, but also a reminder to myself of the fine line I am walking between being unorganized and being a hoarder. Right now, my place is not a write-off, it honestly is not as bad as what you might find on A&E - the main living floor of my house (consisting of my kitchen, dining area, living room and master bedroom), is clean, organized and livable. I also work to ensure that the areas that are messy never get to the point where I’d end up with damage to my house (like rot), nor have I ever had any insect or vermin infestations. And emergency officials can easily get into my place. But I do see how it would be very easy to fall into that kind of an abyss.</image:caption>

<image:caption>40"x40" Photographic Print, March 2015 My third project for Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Fine Arts 3170: Advanced Film Photography as taught by Vancouer artist Kira Wu. My inspiration for this project was drawn from research into the artwork of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. Like Burtynsky, I did my best to shoot from a rather high location, which would allow the user to look down and into what surrounds them. The image was shot using Efke R25 (ISO 25) black and white film on a Mamiya RZ67 with a 65mm lens. The negative was then scanned to computer using an Epson V750-M photo scanner. <image:caption>My first project for Fine Arts 3100: advanced studio practice and seminar 1 course, as taught by Vancouver artist Kitty Leung at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. This 40"x40" digital print is a collage of over 100 individual pieces of junk mail received by Steven Lee between 2008 and 2012. Each side of each piece of junk mail was photographed and the final image was assembled in Photoshop in September 2012. The image was printed onto the same kind of sticker paper that is used by many companies to place advertisements on the floors of shopping market aisles. This image was stuck to the floor of the art gallery's entrance, forcing viewers to immediately confront it when they walked into the gallery. So many of these ads usually go straight to people's recycling bin, and presenting them in this way allows viewers to look at them for what they are, or as they might see when they are piled up in a recyling bin. Steven still has most of the junk mail advertisements he has received in the mail over the years and plans on doing further projects with them.</image:caption>

The assignment asked students to take a snapshot of something that could be considered to be "cruel and tender." I've often gone by roadside memorials and thought they would make an interesting subject for a photographic series and this marks the first photo behind that idea. This photo is also posted on Steven Lee's flickr and Steven's 500px.</image:caption>

<image:caption>13"x19" Digital Photographic Collage, May 2012. This photograph was a part of my digital photography portfolio for Fine Arts 2270: Digital Photography as taught by Vancouver artist Ana Black. For this image, I was inspired by one of photographer Cindy Sherman’s 1979 untitled film series photographs, of her sitting on a bed, looking rather upset. As Sherman was famous for in her series, I setup my room with different clues as to what may have caused myself to be upset – from condoms on the nightstand and an opened one on the bed to money thrown on the bed – all of which added to the construction of the image. This image is also posted to Steven Lee's flickr.</image:caption>

This photo joiner collage was designed in the style of British artist David Hockney. In June 2012, I shot an old set of electric polls situated on Granville Island - a reminder of the kind of polls that were common in the old industrial areas of Vancouver surrounding False Creek.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Photography - panorama</image:title>
<image:caption>60"x12" Digital Photographic Print, June 2012. For my panorama, I shot a number of photographs in the empty parking lot of the Starlight Casino in New Westminster. The photographs were shot in a style similar to my Wal-Mart series, where a number of stills at different lengths of exposure were shot and combined using Photoshop. Those HDR files were then combined using Photoshop’s panorama option.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An updated draft of a practice composition done for my FINA 2135 course titled "Design in Contemporary Art" as taught by Vancouver artist Paulo Majano. The aim of the exercise for this composition was to take a number of photos that featured abstractions, close-ups of objects, as well as photos that emphasized blocks of colour and shape. We then used simple tools learned in our introductory lesson in Adobe Illustrator to make various shapes based on shapes we could see in the photo. When I first started creating the various shapes, I will admit that I was inspired by artist Piet Mondrian, specifically in regards to his use of shape and colour. This image is also posted on Steven Lee's flickr.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A fourth practice composition done for my FINA 2135 course titled "Design in Contemporary Art" as taught by Vancouver artist Paulo Majano. The aim of this exercise was to take the layers of shapes created in the other three photographs and merge them together onto a newly created gradient background in Adobe Illustrator, and make the merged layers look like a unified composition - as if it was created on its own without being taken from the other images. This photo is also posted on Steven Lee's flickr.</image:caption>
