Introductions

Introduce yourself in the discussion forum and describe your interest or reason(s) for taking the class, you must indicate the traditional territory you live on by using https://native-land.ca/. If you do not reside in Canada you can indicate the territory KPU is located on.

I’m Steven, a third year Bachelor of Fine Arts Student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. I was born in Williams Lake, British Columbia, and by birth I know I have ties to the Williams Lake First Nations (WLFN), although I was adopted to a Korean medical doctor and his Caucasian Canadian wife, who are the only parents I’ve ever known. As such, I was not raised within the community of the WLFN, so I don’t really talk about this too often, although I am interested in learning more about my heritage. In 2022, my half-sister found me through social media and introduced herself. I had known about her, but chose not to reach out to her as I didn’t know what she knew about me, as I was the product of an affair my biological Mother had. She has ties to the WLFN, and recently received her status card under the Indian Act. So I’m looking forward to learning more through her knowledge and ties.

When I was 13, my parents retired to South Surrey, British Columbia, which sits on the traditional unceded territory of the Semiahmoo First Nations. As a teenager, I attended Semiahmoo Secondary School, although I do not know if it’s name was used with permission by the Semiahmoo First Nations (as Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s is used with permission from the Kwantlen First Nations).
